His area of specialization is the management and treatment of trauma and trauma related disorders. His expert opinion was sought in numerous court cases where trauma was a central issue.

Gerrit is member of various national and international professional organisations. He is consultant and guest lecturer at the Universities of Stellenbosch and Cape Town and he has given papers at a number of international and national conferences including Buenos Aires, Stockholm, Croatia.
Gerrit has conducted extensive training in the field of trauma.
He is the main author of two books, “Divorce in South Africa” (1987) and “Introduction to Trauma and Traumatic Stress: An African Perspective” (in print), and has also authored articles in international professional journals.
In 1991 he received the Merit Award from the South African Society for Clinical Psychology for his contribution to the profession. He is the founder and director of traumaClinic, an emergency counseling network for the victims of trauma, and Wellnet, a network of wellness practitioners.
